CONGRATULATIONS to Commander David Palmer OBE RN (Retd)
….. for being recognised for his 50 years in the EW business. David will be presented with the HQ AOC 'Board of Directors Award' during the forthcoming AOC Convention taking place in Washington DC on 19 October 2009.
David joined the Royal Navy in 1959 as a special radio intercept operator and by 1968 was the Chief Instructor at the RN EW School, then at HMS MERCURY. He was commissioned in 1972 and subsequently held a variety of EW staff, trials and training appointments until 1986 when he found himself on the staff of C-in-C Fleet as Fleet EW Officer and the senior officer of the RN professional EW Branch. Thereafter he moved to MOD for the next ten years where his job title - but rarely its EW content - changed several times, including time in the Directorate of Joint Warfare. During this period he was also the UK delegate to the NEWAC, NEDBAG and the NACSI special working group. He was presented with the AOC ‘International Achievement in EW’ Award in 1996.
Since his retirement from the Navy in 1997 David has continued to work as a Principal Defence Consultant, lecturer and writer, specialising in EW and associated areas and in Peace Support and Crisis Response Operations (PSO/CRO). He is EW advisor to several nations, both within and outside of NATO, and EW advisor to international organisations including NATO, ESDF and the Partnership for Peace (PfP). He is a Director, writer and lecturer to the NATO Staff Officers’ Joint EW Course (SOJEWC) on behalf of the NEWAC and is a regular presenter on EW and associated subjects at a range

HMS RICHMOND's EW Team wins the Fleet EW effectivemess trophy 2008.
Mr Jim MacCulloch made the main presentation along with Mr John Stubbington from the AOC (Association of Old Crows). The ship was awarded a plaque, certificate and a cheque for £250 as well as the EW Trophy
VISIT BY OLD CROWS ASSOCIATION
On Wed 11 Jun members of the Association Old Crows (AOC) visited the EW Training Element in LEWIN, further promoting established relations between the RN and the AOC. The organisation is an independent, international professional association promoting public understanding in the science and practice of Electronic Warfare (EW), Information Operations (IO) and related disciplines.
During their visit the AOC members received an update on EW training and toured the training facilities. Following lunch they viewed MCTS in Cunningham building, after which a wreath laying ceremony took place outside of Lewin Building to commemorate fallen EW rates in the Falklands Conflict. The members also visited the EW museum in LEWIN building.

Branch dines out veterens

April saw the dining out of 2 of the Branches most senoir Warrant Officers and our most Senior CPO and a seasoned Petty Officer. A branch mess dinner was held onboard HMS WARRIOR to see out over a 115years of combined Naval service. Phillip "Tansy" Lee (Left) is the last remaining (W) to serve in the branch as well as the last Boy (joined at tender age of 15) and last Ganges trained rating of the branch leaves in May, time served and takes up a new job in the Defence industry. Tony Dagens (Centre) leaves the branch in the summer for a new career within the MoD. Martin Wills (Right) leaves after 31 years service, over 21 as a CPO, to become a Flagship Instructor in the MWS. Bomber Mills (no photo) has now left the service after a full 22 year career.

Museum numbers doubled in February as our second veteran Golly visited the school. Peter Brown PJ980550 served between 1958 and 1968 and his original spec was that of RO(S). Peter was given a guided tour of the EW School where he was provided with a demonstration of the Navies very latest EW equipment. In contrast, after a 40 year gap and to the amazement of the staff, proceded to operate the museum working B40 giving the newer generation a taste of what Gollying used to be like.
Branch Pioneer Visits EW School

Harold is presented with a plaque by CPO Wills to commemorate his visit
26 Sep saw a genuine branch pioneer visit HMS Collingwood. Mr Harold Cooke joined the RN in 1945 as a boy Telegraphist, conducting training in HMS Fodroyant. He served in Scotia, Hong Kong, Mercury and an operational tour in Korea. He left the service in 1954 as a PO(TEL)(S). Mr Cooke had a tour of the facilities and EW museum followed by lunch. It is hoped to maintain our links with Harold, who is to donate a genuine 1930's radio receiver to the museum collection.
Golly Double As Teams Win EW Effectiveness Trophies

presented the Fleet EW Efficiency Trophy to CORNWALL’s EW team
Cornwall's EW team proved that once again they are Top Dog in the surface fleet winning the Fleet EW Effectiveness Trophy for a third time in the ships busy career. CPO "Ginge" Hudspeth and his team have displayed exceptional professionalism in providing an superb EW service to their command and in meeting Fleet requirements. HM Sub Septre was awarded the Thales EW Trophy for an outstanding contribution to EW operations.
